Swiss innovation

Rocket Nose

In 2016, Airboard amazed the SUP scene with a completely new shape. The dolphin-like nose of the Airboard® ROCKET simulates a displacement hull, where as little water as possible creates resistance at the tip of the SUP. This shape pushes the water to the side in a wedge shape. While some paddlers still need to get used to the shape, this special nose shape has proven itself and is established in the Airboard range. The "Rocket Nose" can now be found on many boards. This is also the case with our PRONE boards.

Avoid plastic

Sustainability and ecology

Airboard has been trying to reduce the plastic content of its packaging to a minimum for years. The SUP packaging has been made of recycled paper since 2020.

Since 2020, Airboard has been using an extremely light and durable material made from recycled beverage bottles for its SUP bags.

  • Two-layer rail

All of our premium SUPs are produced with a double reinforced side wall (rail). This makes the SUP less vulnerable on impacts. This second border also prevents leaks from occurring.

  • Prelaminated Double Layer

With the prelaminated (fusion) double layer, a second PVC layer is welded on during the production of the base material. This modern process not only makes the SUP more robust, but can also save up to 25% in weight compared to a conventional glued double layer SUP.

SUP tips before buying

Wich SUP should i buy?

There are remarkable differences in performance, stability and durability among inflatable SUP's and testing makes a lot of sense, to find the Board that fits your needs.

Typically, SUPs are divided into different categories:

  • Allround & Beginner SUP: Models that offer good stability and are a lot of fun right from the start. These paddleboards usually come as a complete set, including a paddle.
    > Check out our Allround sets here

  • Touring SUP: These paddleboards are somewhat narrower and longer and are suitable for sporty beginners or experienced paddlers who like to move a bit faster. The sets usually do not include a paddle, as this is often already available.
    > Check out our Touring SUPs here.

  • Race SUP & Whitewater SUP: These stand-up paddleboards have very specific uses and are often bought as a second SUP. You can specifically exclude accessories that you already have with us, allowing you to save money.
    > Find our Race SUPs here
    > ...and our Whitewater SUPs

  • Ultra-light SUP: In 2019, Airboard set a new milestone in SUP history. Inflatable SUPs that are only half as heavy and have half the pack size.
    > Check out our Ultralight SUPs here

Quality and workmanship
The price range of inflatable SUP is huge. - Likewise, the differences in quality and workmanship. A simple SUP with single-layer technology - that is, with only one PVC protective layer - is usually enough for the beginner. - However, it should be ensured that the rail (the border) is constructed with two layers. Because this place is the most sensitive. So a SUP can be left lying in the sun or in the worst case tear along the seam.
Also the load capacity is a crucial point. Some SUPs have a maximum load capacity of less than 100kg. The result: wet feet and a wobbly tilted board.
Much more robust are so-called "double-layer" SUP. In this technology, the SUP is encased in a second layer of PVC. This makes the SUP more resistant and increases the carrying capacity.

There are also some things to consider when it comes to accessories. Is the enclosed paddle swimming? - Not all paddles stay on the water surface when they fall into the water. This can be a serious security risk.

Sustainability and service
When buying a SUP is to pay attention how it behaves with spare parts. Will I get a replacement soon? Nothing is more annoying than if a paddle clamp or a fin can not be replaced on time.
Or if something is wrong with the SUP (loss of air, valve defect ...). - Do I have to replace the complete SUP?
If you buy your SUP from a retailer, you can count on a reliable service. As a rule, defective parts can be replaced at short notice. In the spirit of sustainability.

iSUP vs. Hardboard

Transport
People without a minivan or a roof rack are better served with an iSUP.

Preparation
A hardboard doesn't have to get inflated and is ready immediately.

Stability
The iSUP-Technology allwos a very high stiffness.

Speed and Gliding
A harboard is with his individual shape perfect for contests. But also with iSUP there are special shapes for fast speed and good gliding.

Sturdyness
iSUP are more sturdy than hardboards. High-quality inflatable SUP are equipped with a double layer construction and a reinfoced rail. Hits against bank and shore are no problem. But take care of spiky rocks and broken glass. Leaks are easy to repair.

Price
There are no big differences in price between iSUP and hardboards. Each type is available between budget and pro.

Decision

If you like to SUP in a river you need a durable double layer SUP that resists to unwanted contacts with a rock, good stability sideways and a length that surfs and turns quick into upstream currents.

If you look for a long distance touring SUP you look for a long and easy glider which cuts smoothly through waves and silent water.

To make the right decision when buying, we recommend to take a SUP course or test the different SUP with one of our partners

Swiss quality standards

Depending on the model, 8 to 12 hours of handcraft are included in our SUP
Airboard SUP are produced in nine to ten working steps. They are manufactured according to exact specifications and each step is subject to defined test criteria. In the video below you can see the production of an Airboard SUP, shortened to one minute.

Sustainability and ecology
When selecting components and accessories, we consciously pay attention to sustainability. A defective pump, a defective paddle or valve does not necessarily have to be disposed of. We have all spare parts and the know-how to repair a defect. This relieves the environment and also your budget.

Improvement of Social Performance
Our factory has an Amfori-BSCI audit which is renewed regularly. This represents an improvement of social performance in global supply chains. For further information please visit: https://www.amfori.org/content/amfori-bsci.
In addition, we personally visit each production line up to 4 times a year, not only for one or two days, but usually for 1-2 weeks. With the operators and workers of the factory we have built up a good friendly relationship over many years.  We personally see a positive development of the working conditions and living standards of all employees.

Since 2020 season all SUP will be delivered with bags made from recycled beverage bottles. In addition, we no longer use plastic film for packaging the SUP, but only recycled paper.

From 2021 we pack all paddles supplied in the set in recycled paper. In addition, the pump is packed in a reusable 40l DryBag instead of a plastic bag.

Collaboration with SUP Clinic
A defective SUP does not have to be replaced immediately. Mostly these can be repaired. SUP-Clinic is our partner when it comes to expertly repairing a leak, a broken seam or a faulty valve. If a repair is no longer worthwhile, the SUP Clinic will take care of proper disposal.

Ecology
